- Test it before the first cold snap. Do a dry run in the fall. Plug it in, watch it warm up, check for odd smells or noises, and make sure the cord and plug stay cool.
- Give hens room to choose. Never force birds to stay against the panel. They should always have a cooler part of the coop they can move to if they get too warm.
- Turn it off when it is not needed. I only run the panel during the toughest weather, not all winter long. Hens do better when their bodies adjust to normal cold.
How extra heat affects egg laying
I know what most folks care about: eggs in the basket. A chicken coop heat panel will not magically turn December into June, but it can help your girls hold up during the hardest weeks.
Laying slows down in winter mostly because of short daylight, not just cold. I have had cold but bright days in February where the boxes are full, and mild but gloomy stretches where I barely get an egg. I do use a low‑wattage light on a timer for some of my laying flock, bringing their “day” up to around 14 hours. The panel is there mainly so they are not burning all their feed just staying warm.
